Applied Foreign Language Study Program of Universitas Diponegoro held an Online Visiting Professor activity that met the needs of current world of work, titled “Preparing Workforcces with Global Mindset: Professional Ethics at an Australian Institution”. The organizer invited a lecturer from The University of Adelaide, Mr Agus Putra Wicaksana, PhD to share with the students the professional ethics upheld in Australia.
The speaker introduced his background and career journey, before highlighting how work system in Australia is. Furthermore, he explained that educational institutions in Australia instill professional ethical values from an early age. This is not only through the formal curriculum, but also through campus culture that encourages integrity, accountability, and respect for diversity. Real-life examples and case studies from the Australian work environment were also discussed, providing a concrete picture of how professional ethics are applied in everyday situations.
During his lecture, Mr Wicaksana mentioned the unique traits of Indonesian workforces that could excel in global job market. Some of them included ability to build sincere and long-lasting friendship, neutral perception towards Indonesians, and decent adaptation skills.
Interactive discussions during the Q&A session showed the high level of interest in this topic. Various questions arose around handling ethical dilemmas in the workplace, differences in ethical norms between cultures, and strategies for building a strong professional reputation. Mr Wicaksana provided insights and practical advice, emphasizing that ethics is a key foundation for a sustainable and successful career in the international arena. One of the key traits that the speaker mentioned for the future global workforces was respect to time, i.e. by using it for something more beneficial such as reading and strengthen their communication skills in foreign languages.
Through this activity, students were prepared to face global challenges with an open mentality and solid professional ethics. The lecture was not only about how to work in Australia, but how to become a professional who is ready to compete in the global job market, by upholding ethical values at workplace.
