Adristi Maharani is one of the Applied Foreign Language (AFL) students who had the opportunity to get the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) this year. Adristi is having her 7th semester at the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT). The grades from the host university will be converted to course grades in the home university. How is her experience like in a department that focuses on the hospitality and tourism industry? Let’s take a look at her journal!
A study abroad experience is something I’ve wanted for years. Gladly, I got the opportunity this year! In this 7th semester I had the opportunity to study in Taiwan, more precisely at the National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism (NKUHT). Here I took five courses, some of which were relevant to what I learned at UNDIP, while some of them were new insights for me. Let’s check it out one by one, shall we?
Starting off from the first course in a week, Human Resources Management for Hospitality and Tourism. In this course, I learned about HR management in the world of work. Here I also learned how to make a good job application, as well as getting education about ethical work environment that makes me more aware if I am in a toxic work environment.
On the next day, there was the News Interpretation and Analysis course, where I learned about media literacy and how to analyze news to find factual information and present data. In this course, as a midterm exam, I had the opportunity to analyze a topic and present the results of my analysis in front of the class. The topic I was given was about how the conflict between Russia and Ukraine could have been avoided. The reference given was that this topic was about the connection between the Russia-Ukraine conflict and NATO. Through in-depth analysis, I was finally able to present my analysis well in front of the class!
Furthermore, I also attended the Cross-cultural Communication course. This course made me more aware of the social issues that occur against different cultural backgrounds, improved my skills in adapting among differences, and created a more inclusive social environment. In this course, I also had the opportunity to introduce Indonesian culture to high school students there, by teaching them to try one of the traditional dances, Ratoh Jaroe dance.
In addition, there is the Events, Convention, and Exhibition Planning Practical course. Yep! This class is a practical class. The theoretical material was completed before the midterm, where I learned about the MICE industry, as well as how to structure and operate an event. Then, after the midterm, it was all about workshops! One class was divided into several groups, namely: Art, Singing, Dancing, Food, Beverage, and Managers. In these workshops, each group guided the activities and taught something related to their group’s theme to their classmates. It was super fun!
Last but not least, I also learned Mandarin through Chinese Language Class. I learned the basics, such as how to write mandarin characters, how to introduce myself, and also simple phrases that are commonly used in daily interactions. In this course, I also gained knowledge about Taiwanese culture and the opportunity to learn practically to communicate and make conversation in Chinese with my classmates.
All of these courses complemented each other, and broadened my horizons to knowledge that I may not have learned before.
