The Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology issued Permendikbudristek No. 53 of 2023 which regulates quality assurance in higher education. One consequence of this regulation is a limitation on the maximum number of credits that undergraduate or applied undergraduate students can take in their first year.
First year students for applied undergraduate programs starting in the even semester of the 2023/2024 academic year are limited to taking a maximum of 20 credits. This maximum limit is only intended for students in semesters 1 and 2. Because it is implemented starting in the even semester, only semester 2 students are affected by the implementation of this regulation.
An overview of the consequences of implementing this regulation is as follows.
Student A is a student who will start semester 2. He got a GPA of 3.67 in the previous semester. Based on university regulations, students with a GPA of more than 3.5 are entitled to take study loads with a maximum limit of 24 credits. However, due to the new regulation, he is only entitled to take courses with a maximum limit of 20 credits.
Universitas Diponegoro responded quickly to this new regulation. This is demonstrated by the issuance of circular number 334/UN7-A/Ak/1/2024 concerning Adjustments to the Provisions of Academic Regulations to Minister’s Regulation No. 53 Year 2023. Several things that are regulated are related to the study load of Bachelor’s program students as follows.
a. Minimum 14 (one hundred and forty four) credits.
b. The study load for semester 1 and semester 2 is a maximum of 20 (twenty) credits.
c. Study load for semester 3 and beyond is a maximum of 24 (twenty four) credits.
With the issuance of this circular, the study program at Universitas Diponegoro has also adjusted the number of courses required for first year students to take. There are several changes regarding the package of courses that first year students need to take. Further adjustments will be implemented to freshmen admitted to the AY 2024/2025.
