Applied Foreign Languages, Diponegoro University held a public lecture titled “Mastering Intercultural Competence in Global Business” on Wednesday, August 23 2023. The speaker at the public lecture was Aron Laki from ELTE University, Hungary. He is a lecturer specializing in cultural and linguistic studies. During its run, this event was guided by Applied Foreign Language students, Ghanim Faheema Damayanti as the presenter, and Ghina Humaira Nurvan, as the moderator.
The public lecture was attended by all students of the Applied Foreign Languages study program class of 2021 and 2022 as a provision to increase students’ knowledge and understanding of global cultural diversity in the ever-developing world. Apart from that, students are expected to understand how to respond to globalization which have affected local cultural entities quite a lot.
Mr Aron Laki delivered material regarding culture, history and distribution of culture, cultural differences between countries, tips for dealing with cultural diversity, and ended with a question and answer session. One of the things that can be learned from Mr Aron is that don’t be afraid to learn about new cultures or languages. Apart from books, language is also a window to the world. Through diverse language proficiency, we are able to obtain two or three times more information than just understanding one language.
“Surround yourself with the language you want to learn every day. “Never get tired of constantly repeating things you don’t know in the language you want to learn,” he concluded.
Through this public lecture, Applied Foreign Language students are expected to have an understanding of cultural diversity, and know how to deal with the diversity in line with current developments.
