Diponegoro University Applied Foreign Language Students Participate in an International Internship Program at Ogawaya Gero Onsen, Japan

Ghanim Faheema Damayanti, a student in the Applied Foreign Languages Study Program at Diponegoro University, had the opportunity to participate in an international internship program at Ogawaya Gero Onsen, a popular hotel in Gifu Prefecture known for its quality service and traditional Japanese ryokan atmosphere. Ghanim traveled with two other participants: Muhammad Hassan Reyhan Savero and Kenji Brando, both students from National University.

During her internship, Ghanim gained work experience in the Housekeeping department. While the primary focus was on the operational aspects of arranging and maintaining guest rooms, the program emphasized not only the technical aspects of the job but also an understanding of the discipline, work ethic, and attention to detail that are characteristic of the Japanese hospitality industry.

Beyond her regular duties, Ghanim also participated in various support activities that provided a broader understanding of the working rhythm of a Japanese ryokan. These activities introduced her to the guest service process from morning to night, including how every small detail plays a crucial role in guest comfort. This experience further enriched my understanding of the importance of inter-departmental coordination in creating comprehensive and quality services.

During her internship, Ghanim not only learned about hotel operations but also interacted directly with local staff from diverse backgrounds. Through daily interactions, both at work and in the dormitory, Ghanim gained a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. Values such as omotenashi (respect, respect, teamwork, and attention to detail) became important lessons that are useful not only in a professional context but also in everyday life as an individual living in a new cultural environment.

The internship experience at Ogawaya Gero Onsen not only provided insight into how the Japanese hospitality industry operates but also opened up new perspectives for Ghanim regarding career opportunities in the international sector. Through this opportunity, it is hoped that Indonesian students’ competencies in the hospitality industry will further develop and their courage to participate in the global arena will be enhanced.
