Advanced Speaking Class: Learn to Be Host & Presenter from the Expert

Advanced Speaking, a course offered for English stream in Applied Foreign Language program, invited Stefanie Sewotaroeno who is a practitioner, writer, and also a poet from Suriname on 23 and 30 May 2022. For the two meetings, this speaking class was attended by both lecturers and students in Applied Foreign Languages.

In the Advanced Speaking class on 23 May 2022, Stefanie explained tips to be a good presenter as follows:

  • Prepare everything you need to be a presenter.
  • Understand subjects that you are going to present.
  • Find information on the background of the guests/speakers.
  • Talk in an appropriate intonation.
  • Use respectful and appropriate language.
Advanced Speaking Class (23 May 2022)

Meanwhile, in the Advanced Speaking class on May 30, 2022, several students were challenged to make a talk show where they served as hosts. The talk show held by the second-year students of the Applied Foreign Language program titled “What is Public Speaking?”. The guest on this talk show was Stefanie who was a speaker in the previous meeting.

In this student-led talk show, Stefanie gave tips and tricks to become a good speaker in public. Not only that, she also provided a way to be able to manage time well to stay productive and avoid procrastination behavior which is very useful for students in everyday life. This event was fun and relaxed as the hosts played the game ‘This or That’ with the hosts.

Stefanie told the audience, “Everyone can certainly speak, but not everyone can do a public speaking. Public speaking is an art of speaking in front of many people and in public speaking, it has important elements such as the ability to communicate in conveying information in front of many people.”

Advanced Speaking Class (30 May 2022)

Organizing this talk show is the final semester assignment for the Advanced Speaking course that applies project-based learning. This activity has been carried out since 2021 for this course. Students are expected to increase their confidence in communicating in public. and using English.
