Thanks to a collaboration between the Applied Foreign Languages Study Program at Diponegoro University and its partners, PT. Japan Indonesia Program Akademik (JIPA) and 44-Project Co., Ltd., two Japanese Language students (Sahnasya Lahujuta and Ikbar Akmal Lesmana) were sent on an internship program in Japan. The field of study this time is hospitality and service. The program aims to provide first-hand experience with Japanese work culture and improve students’ language skills.
One of the internship destinations for the program participants is the Hotel Dai-ichi Takimotokan, a renowned ryokan located in the Noboribetsu Onsen area of Hokkaido. The hotel is known as one of the oldest inns in the area, boasting onsen facilities featuring five types of natural hot springs and over thirty baths. Through placement at this hotel, students have the opportunity to understand the practice of omotenashi, a traditional Japanese service concept, and the professional work system in the hospitality industry, a hallmark of Japanese tourism.

This internship program allows students to immerse themselves directly in the tourism industry, particularly in the hospitality and restaurant sector, tourist attractions, and more. During this activity, students gain new experience and knowledge about Japanese business ethics, such as how to solve problems, how to interact with customers, and much more. These skills are not only valuable to understand but can be directly applied in future careers. Furthermore, this internship program is also useful in everyday life, such as improving time management, enhancing direct communication skills, providing lessons on adapting to new environments, and more.
The internship program includes roles as a housekeeper, Daiyokujou (hot spring) staff, and Araiba staff. Their primary responsibility is to maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the hotel rooms. Their primary duties include cleaning rooms, changing linens, and ensuring all facilities are in good condition. This job requires attention to detail and the ability to work efficiently, as housekeeping has a predetermined time limit.

On the other hand, students must also be prepared at all times, especially when interacting with guests who arrive immediately. In these situations, guests often have questions, whether regarding applicable regulations or even information about the hotel’s facilities and services. Therefore, it is crucial for students to not only understand this information but also be able to answer these questions.
Overall, this internship experience not only provides practical skills but also broadens horizons and understanding of different cultures, particularly Japanese culture. Students not only learn how to work in a professional environment but also develop themselves personally. With all the experience and knowledge gained, students will be better prepared to face challenges in the workplace. We hope that this article will provide a clear overview of the experience and benefits gained from this internship program.
